Cipla against patent on bird-flu drug
Mumbai: Cipla is opposing the patent application on Oseltamivir, the drug used to treat bird flu. The company filed its pre-grant opposition at the Patent Office in New Delhi earlier this month. Cipla officials said that the pre-grant application had been "filed on the grounds of known prior-art, invalid claim, lack of novelty and inventive step." Prior-art is when knowledge of the drug already exists before the cut-off date — of 1995, in this case — and, hence, a patent cannot be claimed, explained an expert on Intellectual Property (IP). There is already another pre-grant opposition on Oseltamivir, filed by Meditab Specialities. A pre-grant opposition allows people to contest a patent application filed by a company at the Patent Office.

Oseltamivir developed by Gilead Sciences is sold globally by Roche under the Tamiflu brand name. On hearing the patent-holder and the opposition, the Patent Office eventually grants or rejects the drug firm's application for a patent.

The Indian Patent Office had rejected Novartis' claim for a patent on imatinib mesylate, its cancer drug sold under the brand name Gleevec.

Bangalore: The infotech services arm of the AV Birla Group has again become profitable and is poised for a new phase of growth. The company's consolidated revenues for FY06 were almost flat at Rs85.78 crore as compared to previous year's Rs82.13 crore. Hinduja group plans to set up LCV plant in AP
Hyderabad: The Hinduja group is considering setting up a light commercial vehicle (LCV) plant and reviving its 1,000-MW coal-based projects in Andhra Pradesh. The LCV plant will be in the form of an assembling facility at Tada in Nellore. The revival of the 1000-MW power plant could mean an investment of Rs4,000 crore to Rs5,000 crore, and an LCV unit could mean an investment of about Rs1,000 crore.

The Hinduja team had proposed a plan to locate a LCV plant near Tada, which would be an ideal location and closer to their existing plant in Chennai. According to sources, the Hinduja representatives had come up with a proposal to set up a special economic zone (SEZ) in the State for manufacturing units, and this vehicle plant could be one such in the proposed SEZ. The Hinduja power project was witness to price revision and was later done away since the project cost was much higher compared to the NTPC Simhadri plant.

The Rs6,053-crore Hinduja group-owned Ashok Leyland Ltd had earlier this year indicated its interest for capacity expansion at its existing plant and the move to set up a LCV unit to tap into the growing market in that segment.
