JK Galbraith passes away
Economist par excellence John Kenneth Galbraith has died at the age of 97 A democrat to the core, Galbraith held a fierce loyalty to the economics of markets and freedom of choice. Galbraith was perhaps the last of the great Keynesians with an unshakeable faith in the need for purposeful policy action by governments in the social sphere despite all the corporate power of the new industrial state that has become the model for all economies everywhere.

Vikas Gupta resigns as Coke marketing head
New Delhi: Vikas Gupta Coca-Cola India's head of marketing, is resigning. Sources say he is leaving the cola company to join a media house. In the past six months a number of high profile professionals have left Coke India. Earlier its franchisee head Jaspal Singh who was with the company for the last ten years quit to join a private equity firm. Coke's head of north India operations Amit Jain quit to join MTV India as its managing director.

Coke has taken in Vikas Chawla serving as the country manager for Coca Cola Sri Lanka as its vice president (franchisee business operations) in India in place of Jaspal Singh and is bringing in Sumanta Datta from Coca Cola China as the regional veep (operations) for north India as a replacement for Amit Jain. In China he was serving as a regional manager for Shanghai.

Satyam appoints new global marketing and communications VP
Hyderabad: Satyam Computer Services has appointed Dr Robert `Bob' Baginski as senior vice-president of global marketing and communications. He will lead Satyam's marketing, communications and branding initiatives worldwide. Prior to joining Satyam, Baginski served as global director of integrated marketing for Accenture's business consulting division. And before that, he was partner and director of marketing for CSC's Consulting Group.

R S Reddy appointed exec director of Union Bank
Mumbai: The Union Bank of India has appointed R S Reddy as executive director. Reddy has over three decades of experience as a banker in multifarious assignments as regional manager and general manager in Karnataka, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Reddy also had a three-and-a-half year stint as chief executive of Bank of India's US operations in New York. Since his July 2005 return from the US, Reddy has been serving in the asset recovery department of Union Bank, the release said.

SS Mehta is new director general at CII
New Delhi: There has been an unexpected change of guard at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The current director general N Srinivasan, who succeeded Tarun Das two years back, is leaving to take an advisory role with the president of CII. He will be replaced by a newcomer to CII SS Mehta, a retired army officer. The changes will come into effect from 11 May '06.
