BITS
expanding presence
Panaji: The Birla Institute of Technology and Science
(BITS), Pilani is expanding its presence by establishing
three more campuses in addition to the existing three
in the next five years. With the new institutes the strength
of Pilani, Goa and Dubai taken together, would rise to
8,000 in the next two years from the present 4,000.
The
Chancellor of BITS, Pilani, K.K. Birla said BITS campus
in Hyderabad would come up soon for which it has acquired
200 acres of land from the State Government. He said that
when that campus becomes fully functional, the total student
strength of BITS, including all its other campuses, would
rise to about 11,000.
The
institute opened its Dubai campus in 2000 which has 900
students and the number is expected to touch 1,500 soon.
Apart from campus training, around 10,000 students were
receiving education of a high order through off-campus
and collaborative programmes.

Karnataka
to set up SEZ at Shimoga
Bangalore: The Karnataka government plans to set
a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) near Shimoga in Southern
Karnataka to promote textiles and IT sector. This would
be the third SEZ in the state after Mangalore and Hassan.
A
government official said the government of Karnataka intends
to promote industries, especially export oriented units,
and to generate employment. A number of SEZs are also
being promoted by the private sector in Karnataka which
are facing a unique problem regarding notification.
The
official said the new Karnataka Industrial Policy (2006-2011)
would be announced shortly and would includes an updated
version of the state's export policy. The government also
plans to rework the government-sponsored Focus Town scheme
soon.
