UK
to cut cell roaming charges
London: Vodafone has announced a cut in global
roaming charges for mobile telephones for Europe by as
much as 40 per cent. Arun Sarin the CEO of Vodafone has
responded to pressure from European regulators to cut
costs for global roaming.
Vodafone,
the world's biggest operator has promised that the average
cost to its customers for calls in Europe would fall from
more than 61p a minute to less than 37.7p a minute by
next April.
Vodafone's
announcement comes six weeks after the European Commission
warned that it planned to force mobile phone companies
to cancel extra charges for calls abroad. Earlier in March,
Reding announced a plan to get rid of the high charges
levied by mobile phone companies on using phones abroad.
The commission's proposal would see the cost of local
and international calls reduced to the same level they
would pay at home. This looks like being the principle
that will be adopted for mobile phone use in important
emerging markets like India.
Vodafone
plans reciprocal wholesale pricing agreements with other
operators in Europe a move the company believes will lead
to lower prices across Europe. It is also proposing to
offer rivals an average charge for roaming on its European
subsidiary networks of no more than 30.8p a minute, down
from an average wholesale rate of 47.9p a minute.

Dell
lowers Q1 revenue
Dell has cut its first quarter revenue forecast due to
extensive price cuts. The company said it was making efforts
to revive sales.
Dell
now expects first quarter revenue to come in at $14.2bn,
which is at the lowest possible end of a previous forecast
of between $14.2bn and $14.6bn in revenue. Dell had been
expected to announce revenue of $14.7bn. This was scaled
down after Dell warned that it would report single-digit
growth in the coming months.
Dell
is dependent on its low-margin PC business and its adherence
to Intel-only chips has cut it off from growing x86 server
market, based on AMD's Opteron chip.
Dell
shares down 6 per cent in the after-hours market as the
revenue miss was announced.
