AMD
sees sales down 9 percent in 2Q
California: Advanced Micro Devices Inc maker of
microprocessors has warned that its second quarter sales
will be 9 percent below the first quarter, missing Wall
Street forecasts. The No. 2 computer chip maker after
Intel Corp., AMD said it expects revenue of $1.22 billion
for the second quarter, up 52 percent over the same period
last year but below the $1.31 billion analysts had expected,
according to Thomson Financial.
AMD
said sales of mobile and desktop processors had dipped
in the second quarter. In May, AMD shares surged on news
that leading PC maker Dell Inc. would incorporate AMD
chips into its high-end servers and end its exclusive
relationship with Intel. AMD shares fell 7 cents to $23.83
Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange before the sales
outlook was released. AMD plans to report its quarterly
results July 20 after the market close.

Microsoft
may be fined by EU
Microsoft Corp may be fined next week for failing to comply
with European Union's antitrust order, Competition Commissioner
Neelie Kroes said. She declined to say the amount of the
fine.
Competitors
and regulators say Microsoft, did not comply with an order
passed on March 2004 to license information to rivals
on how Windows communicates over a network. The fines,
which the European Commission has said would be backdated
to Dec. 15, may touch hundreds of millions of euros.
Regulators
from the EU's member states voted on July 3 to support
the commission's plan to fine Microsoft by as much as
2 million euros ($2.5 million) a day for failing to comply,
three people with knowledge of the closed-door meeting
said at the time. The commission, the EU's antitrust authority,
says failure to provide the information hinders competition
in the market.
Representatives
of the 25-member EU will meet again on July 10 to decide
how much to fine Microsoft.
