CII favours gradual entry of FDI in retail

Kolkata: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) favours the gradual entry of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the organised retail sector, according to its president R Seshasayee.

A fact-based approach was needed to gauge the impact of FDI in retail, for which pilot projects should be commissioned in select metropolitan cities where foreign players would be allowed to start retail operations, Seshasayee told the press.

Allowing FDI in retail, as an issue, had become sensitive as the Left parties had been strongly opposing this on grounds that this would lead to displacement of thousands of small shopkeepers across the country.
