to sell electricity generation assets for the first time
Shanghai: China plans to sell off electricity generation
assets worth more than 10 billion yuan ($1.25 billion)
for the first time to private and foreign firms in an
effort to reform the power sector. The assets have an
aggregated generating capacity of 9.2 million kilowatts
in 38 electric power plants, and covers seven listed companies
and three joint ventures.
The
State Grid Corporation and China Southern Power Grid,
control the assets according to Beijing Times.
In
2002, the assets were commissioned by the Chinese government
to manage and sell the assets to finance the ongoing reform
of the power industry. The sale is likely to be completed
by next spring at least.

to extend Tibet railway to Xigaze
Shanghai: China is extending its newly-built railway
to Tibet by 270 km from Lhasa to the region's second largest
city of Xigaze, close to the Indian border, next year.
The project will take three years to complete. Officials
said the railway will offer great opportunities for the
social and economic development of Xigaze.
The city of Xigaze, located at an altitude of about 3,800
metres, is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, and
the prefecture is also an important production base for
agriculture and animal husbandry in Tibet.
The
Xigaze prefecture borders India, Nepal and Bhutan in the
south.
The
Qinghai-Tibet Railway stretches 1,956 kilometres from
Xining, capital of northwest China's Qinghai Province,
to Lhasa.
