SEZs get approval
New Delhi: The Commerce and Industry Minister,
Kamal Nath, has cleared 46 special economic zones (SEZ),
based on the recommendations of the Board of Approvals
(BoA) at its meeting held on August 8.
Of
these prominent ones include Essar Jamnagar SEZ Developer
Ltd (Gujarat), Infosys Technologies (Karnataka and Maharashtra),
Wipro Ltd (Maharashtra), Cognizant Technology Solutions
India Pvt Ltd (Tamil Nadu), HCL Technologies Ltd (Tamil
Nadu and Uttar Pradesh), Bata (West Bengal), Ansal Properties
and Infrastructure Ltd (Haryana), Mahindra Gesco Developers
Ltd (Maharashtra), Unitech Real Estate Project Ltd (Kerala),
NIIT Technologies Ltd (Uttar Pradesh) and Enfield Exports
Ltd (West Bengal).
The
sectors covered include multi-products, engineering goods,
IT/ITES and biotechnology. In all 150 SEZs have been approved
so far.

World
Bank approves health projects after investigations
Washington: The World Bank has approved $672 million
for India's health system, which had been withheld while
the bank investigated corruption allegations in the procurement
process. The bank is supporting three new health projects
that focus on improving services for women and children
and on the reduction of infectious diseases, the World
Bank said. India has made significant progress in improving
its health-care system, but it still has very high levels
of maternal and child mortality, the bank said. About
136,000 women and 2.4 million children die every year
in India mostly as a result of preventable causes, the
World Bank said.

Sri
Lanka allows Indian food imports to Jaffna
Colombo: Sri Lanka allowed private traders in the
island's embattled Jaffna peninsula to import food directly
from south Indian ports.
The
Hindu Affairs Minister, Douglas Devananda said, "The
decision was taken because of the shortages we expect
in Jaffna," the minister said.
