Toshiba also recalls Sony
batteries
Tokyo: Toshiba Corp said it would replace
about 340,000 laptop computer batteries worldwide. This
is the third recall of faulty batteries made by Sony Corp.
in less than 40 days.
A
Toshiba spokesman said the batteries manufactured between
March and May this year, could fail anytime because of
problems with storing and transmitting power.
The company did not say whether it was asking Sony to
foot the bill.
Toshiba
also said that the faulty batteries would not cause fires
but can die only in rare cases.
Last
month, Dell Inc. and Apple Computer Inc. recalled almost
six million Sony-made batteries, saying they could produce
smoke and catch fire.
Fujitsu
Ltd. and Hewlett Packard Co., which also use Sony batteries
in their laptops, said no battery problems have been reported
in quality control checks.

Yahoo
says results would be at low end of forecast
San Francisco: Yahoo!, has said that profit and sales
this quarter would be at the low end of its forecast because
of slower advertising demand from automakers and financial
services providers. Yahoo forecast in July net sales of
$1.12 billion to $1.23 billion for the third quarter,
ending Sept. 30, and an operating income before depreciation,
amortization and stock-based compensation expenses of
$445 million to $505 million.
Yahoo's announcement of slowing sales sparked concern
of a general reduction in demand for Internet advertising
and shopping, led to a drop in shares of Google, eBay
and Amazon.com.
Shares of Yahoo, based in Sunnyvale, California, fell
$3.25, or 11 percent, to close at $25.75 in New York.
Yahoo
stock had its biggest drop ever, a decline of 22 per cent.
