Raj
Jain is Wal-Mart president, CEO designate for Indian operations
New Delhi: Wal-mart has appointed Raj Jain as president
and CEO designate for its operations in India.
Jain, former regional director for marketing and product
delivery in Whirlpool Asia, was appointed early this year
by Wal-Mart as the president for its emerging markets
in Asia, excluding China and Japan.
Top
sources said Jain has been hired specifically to spearhead
the retail company's entry into India and is currently
based in Shanghai, where he is undergoing training.
Wal-Mart
is also believed to be building its top team in India,
including the head of finance, marketing and legal affairs.
It appears that Wal-Mart does not want to wait anymore
to enter India. It's expectation that the government would
liberalise foreign investment norms in theretail sector
has not materialised so far and so the company is now
exploring options like appointing Indian business houses
as its franchisee partners.
The
company has set up a project office in Delhi and working
on various entry strategies, including the cash and carry
(wholesale) model.
