Clariant
to cut 2,200 Europe jobs
Basel: Swiss chemicals group Clariant plans to
cut about 2,200 jobs over the next three years, mainly
by closing plants in Europe. Clariant had announced a
review of its operations in August this year after it
reported a 24 per cent slump in its H1 net profit to 109
million Swiss francs (USD88.4 million).
The
company posted a net loss of 14 million Swiss francs on
continuing operations during the third quarter, against
a 110 million Swiss franc profit in the same period last
year.
Clariant
employs a total of 22,000 people globally. The company
apart from cutting its network of sites by 10 per cent
would also reduce its product line by 25 pc by 2009.
The
group is aiming to re-focus on fast growing markets in
China and India under the cost-cutting plan and said the
improvements will enable the company to generate profitable
long-term growth and to achieve sustained cost leadership
in the specialty chemicals industry.
