ICANN
board gets 1st Indian
Chennai: R. Ramaraj, former CEO of Sify, and current
mentor for early-stage technology companies, has been
appointed as director on board of the Internet Corporation
for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). He is possibly
the first Indian on ICANN's board of directors, since
it was set up in 1998.
ICANN
is responsible for global coordination of the Internet's
system of unique identifiers domain names such
as .org, .museum and country codes such as .IN. Computers
use these identifiers to reach each other over the Internet.
At its Web site www.icann.org, it says, "Careful
management of these resources is vital to the Internet's
operation, so ICANN's global stakeholders meet regularly
to develop policies that ensure the Internet's ongoing
security and stability."
Ramaraj's
tenure begins this year and ends in 2009. The other two
members selected this year are Roberto Gaetano from Italy
and Steven Goldstein from the US. The board has fifteen
voting members, currently chaired by Vinton Cerf, popularly
known as the `Father of Internet' for his role in the
creation of technologies used to transfer data across
the Internet.

Shahrukh
to host quiz show KBC
Mumbai: Shahrukh Khan is taking over from the Big
B as host of the hugely popular TV game show "Kaun
Banega Crorepati".
The
STAR network has offered SRK the show who has admitted
it would be "a huge act to follow" in the footsteps
of Amitabh, who made "KBC" one of the country's
most watched TV programmes.
Samir Nair, CEO of the Star India channel said Mr Bachchan
expressed his disinclination to do the show and we respect
his decision. We are indebted to him for what he brought
to the show but now it is time to move on and who better
to hand over the baton to than Shah Rukh Khan.
