Netizens
to rejoice as downloads get faster
Chennai: Beginning January 2007 netizens can rejoice
as Internet downloads with unlimited broadband will be
easily available according to the Union Minister for Communications
and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran.
According
to Maran public sector telecom companies, BSNL and MTNL,
are working towards "proactive pricing" and
will make available unlimited broadband to registered
subscribers.
Maran
added that 2007 would see a number of milestones crossed
in the telecom sector and "unlimited broadband"
is one of them. Apart from this the C-Dot Alcatel joint
venture in Chennai will come out with equipment for WiMax.
With the low-cost equipment from the WiMax, usage will
increase.
The
year will also see a base created for increased telephone
penetration in India. This is because, the Government
will put to use the Rs 7,000-odd crore collected from
various telecom companies for their failing to fulfil
their Universal Service Obligation.

Interconnection
made mandatory by Trai
New Delhi: Subscribers to any telecom operator
like Airtel, Hutch or Idea will be able to access services
like astrology or toll free phone numbers offered by another
operator. This is as the Telecom Regulatory Authority
of India has made it mandatory for operators to interconnect
with each other for Intelligent Network (IN) services
like tele voting and contests which till now could be
accessed by their respective subscribers only.
IN
services are easily accessible to all consumers in developed
countries and any subscriber of any operator is able to
access the IN services provided by any other provider.
However, in contrast, in India subscribers are able to
access the IN platform of their own service provider only.
TRAI
has said that IN service is not a separate service, therefore,
the regulation would ensure that specified innovative
services made available through IN will not be restricted
to the telecom service providers who have deployed the
platform, but also be available to subscribers of other
operators.
