Soren gets life imprisonment
New Delhi: Former Union Minister and Jharkhand
Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief, Shibu Soren (62) has been sentenced
to life imprisonment for the murder of his secretary Shashinath
Jha.. CBI had made a strong plea for awarding him capital
punishment.
The
tribal leader from Jharkhand was forced to quit as coal
minister in the Manmohan Singh Government last week on
his convictio. He also has to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh
that would go to the mother and two daughters of the victim
Jha killed 12 years ago.
Soren
was convicted by Additional Sessions Judge B R Kedia.
A sixth-time member of Lok Sabha, Guruji, as Soren is
called by his supporters, can retain his membership of
the House if he goes in appeal against his conviction
and sentence for which he has three months time.

Pavan
Dhamija to head Stanchart consumer finance biz
Mumbai: Pavan Dhamija ahs been appointed as chief
executive officer (CEO) of Prime Financial India and head
of consumer finance division by Standard Chartered Bank.
Prime Financial is the brand under which the bank conducts
its consumer finance business and was launched in India
in late 2005.
Prior
to the appointment, Dhamija was with GE Money, China,
where he was operations director and part of the core
team that built the GE consumer finance business.
In
his new role with Stanchart, Dhamija will lead the Prime
Financial business to build a strong franchise in India
as a leading provider of financial solutions with a broad
product suite.

Sandip
Das of Hutch joins Maxis as CEO
Mumbai: Sandip Das, deputy managing director of
Hutchison-Essar, has resigned after a 13-year stint with
the company to join the global operations of Malaysian
telecom major Maxis Communications as CEO of the company.
Das
would continue to work with the company for another month,
serving his notice period, before he takes up the new
assignment. The replacement at Hutchison would be announced
shortly.
Sandip
Das served in various capacities at Hutchison like regional
head, executive director and chief executive officer of
the company. He was named deputy MD in November 2004.
The appointment was pursuant to a major rehauling of the
company's top management structure.
