Ranbaxy promotes Atul Sobti to COO
Mumbai: Ranbaxy Laboratories has promoted Atul Sobti to the position of chief operating officer (COO) effective January 01, 2007. Sobti will be responsible for global business operations, manufacturing and generic development and would continue to report to Malvinder Singh, CEO and MD of the company.

Announcing Sobti's appointment, Singh said: "With continued aggressive growth plans in 2007 and beyond, we need to ensure an integrated, cohesive and cost effective organisation globally with greater interaction and seamless interface amongst all facets of the value adding process from the lab to market. The COO's position will effectively bring about these improved efficiencies by integrating leadership and accountability for the global P&L.

Sobti spearheaded the company's Asian territory as president Asia (API sales & purchasing and GCHC).

Kamath gets CNBC-TV18 award
Chennai: CNBC-TV18 has given The India Business Leader Awards, to a number of businessmen in several categories. The business channel on its seventh anniversary recognised K.V. Kamath, MD and CEO, ICICI Bank Ltd, as an outstanding business leader of the year while the lifetime achievement award went to N.R. Narayana Murthy, Infosys founder. The award for contribution to the cause of Indian business went to M. Damodaran, chairman, SEBI, and the businesswoman of the year was given to Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, CMD, Biocon Ltd.

The innovator of the year award went to Uday Kotak, MD, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Anand Mahindra, who had already been awarded the Asia business leader of 2006 in Hong Kong in October, was named the India business leader 2006.

The Indian global achiever award went to Lakshmi Mittal, chairman, Arcelor Mittal.
