Deposed
Iraqi president Saddam Hussein executed
Quoting Iraqi state television the US daily The
Washigton Post's online edition has reported that
deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein was executed early
Saturday morning in Baghdad.
Hussein
is reported to have been hanged to death. He had been
tried for 'crimes against humanity' for the death of 148
Shiites in town of Dujail in 1982 by security forces.(See:
Guilty
of what?)
Hussein, who rose from humble beginnings to become president
built a modern, secular Arab nation, was deposed by a
joint Anglo-American military coalition backed by some
European countries.
Hussein's
fall has unleashed a violent sectarian conflict that threatens
to tear the country apart even as the US and the UK wrestle
to find a solution that would enable them to withdraw
their troops from Iraq without the stigma of having blundered
militarily. (See: Moment
