US
Airways raises bid for Delta
New York: US Airways Group Inc has raised its takeover
offer for Delta Air Lines Inc by 20 per cent to $10.3
billion on Wednesday.
Last
month Delta rejected the original bid, valued at $8.5
billion at Tuesday's market close, saying the company
is worth at least $9.4 billion, and possibly as much as
$12 billion, as an independent carrier.
The
latest bid sets a Feb. 1 deadline for creditors to react.

WTO
talks may revive soon
Washington: EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson
and Japanese Trade Minister Akira Amari have declared
their joint commitment to an early and ambitious final
agreement in the Doha world trade talks, according to
a statement by the EU Commission.
Amari's
visit to Brussels was the latest in a flurry of meetings
between top negotiators to try to resuscitate the World
Trade Organisation's (WTO) Doha round of talks on lowering
barriers to commerce after they all but collapsed last
July.
US
Trade Representative Susan Schwab met Mandelson in Washington
this week and will travel to Geneva on Friday for talks
with WTO chief Pascal Lamy, who called a halt to the talks
six months ago because divisions were too deep to bridge.
