Kolkata may come to halt this week
Kolkata: Large parts of West Bengal including Kolkata could soon see petrol pumps drying up as oil tanker owners have refused to end their strike following the failure of successive rounds of talks with the state transport minister and oil companies.

With the two opposing parties, the tank owners and oil companies like Indian Oil, BPCL and HPCL refusing to budge from their stands, the situation may get worse.

The West Bengal Tankers Association is demanding a hike in transportation rates paid by the oil companies while the oil companies say it is not feasible to accept the demands of the transporters as the rate offered is highest in the country.

While the oil companies have their own fleet, the size at 40 tankers is miniscule compared to the 400 tankers owned by transporters. Oil companies say they can take care of 720 kilo litres against a demand of 9,000 kilo litre — petrol, diesel and kerosene taken together in the state.
