Icahn
seeks place on Motorola board
New York: Billionaire investor Carl Icahn is seeking
a place on Motorola Inc.'s board since picking up a stake
in the company. His aim is to convince the company to
go for a share buyback offer.
Motorola's
shares were up 7 per cent on the news. The company has
seen a sharp drop in profit due to price cuts for its
flagship Razr phone and tough competition in emerging
markets.
Icahn
says he wants Motorola to take on more debt and return
more cash to shareholders in the form of a share repurchase.
Icahn
said his holdings stood at 40 million shares on Tuesday
afternoon. He said he was likely to end efforts to get
on Motorola's board if it did a huge buyback.

Sony
Q3 profit falls
Tokyo: Sony Corp has posted a 14.9 per cent fall
in quarterly operating profit due to losses at its gaming
division that were more than sales of its flat TVs. However
the company has raised its annual outlook.
Group
operating profit at Sony stood at 178.91 billion yen ($1.47
billion) in October-December, down from 210.35 billion
yen in the same period a year earlier.
The
profit fall was expected as Sony had said losses at its
game unit would rise to about 200 billion yen for the
year ending March, due to costs related to its new PlayStation
3 game console and slow sales of PlayStation Portable
handheld players.
For
the full year, Sony has raised its operating profit forecast
to 60 billion yen from 50 billion yen, against a 226.42
billion yen profit last fiscal.
