Airtel reshuffles managerial ranks

New Delhi: Bharti Airtel has appointed Manoj Kohli to head the company's telecom business as Sunil Mittal has handed over his operational responsibilities in the company. The Group has appointed Sanjay Kapoor, Atul Bindal, David Nishball joint presidents to lead the mobile business, broadband and telephony and enterprise services respectively.

Kohli will report to Mittal, and also work closely with Akhil Gupta, group lead director - telecom, Bharti Enterprises.

The three joint presidents will report to Kohli.

Sarvjit Dhillon has been appointed chief financial officer and director-strategy, Bharti Airtel. Dhillon will report to Kohli and functionally to Akhil Gupta, who is also the Chairman of Group Finance and Audit Council.

Bharti Airtel according to analysts is gearing up counter the challenge posed by Vodafore Essar. The country's third-most valuable firm with a market cap of $31.6 billion said the existing business roles and responsibilities at the company had been strengthened and enhanced to ensure greater operational empowerment and bring in effective management to take on competition.

The company has also laid an aggressive strategy to take on competition by adding nearly 100 million subscribers over the next three years. The company said it is looking at acquiring telecom companies in neighbouring countries.

Bharti Airtel currently has 35 million subscribers and commands 22 pc of India's mobile phone market.

Edelweiss makes new appointments for MF biz
Mumbai: Mumbai-based financial services company Edelweiss has announced three senior management appointments to spearhead its new businesses of mutual fund and non banking finance company after receiving regulatory approvals.

R Balakrishnan has been appointed as executive vice president and heads the Edelweiss NBFC, a new line of business to be added to the Edelweiss stable,an Edelweiss release said.

Balakrishnan has over three decades of experience in banking and finance, credit and capital markets as CEO and CIO of First IndiaMutual Fund, as senior vice president and head of equity research at DSP Merrill Lynch among others.

Jimmy Patel has joined as CEO of the Asset Management Company (AMC) for which Edelweiss has received in- principle approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He has 17 years of experience in the financial services sector including those as CEO & COO of JM Financial Mutual Fund, Tata Mutual Fund among others.

Peeyoosh Chadda has come onboard at Edelweiss as Co-Head of the mutual fund business. He will contribute to growing the AMC business which will cater to domestic and overseas clients interested in investing across asset classes in India.

Peeyoosh worked at Barclays Capital, India, for 5 years, prior to which he was at State Street Global Advisors

Vizag Steel Plant gets new director
Visakhapatnam: Y. Manohar, general manager (training and HRD), Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, has assumed charge as the director (personnel) of the plant on Tuesday. A graduate in metallurgical and chemical engineering, he joined the plant in 1981. Prior to that, Manohar worked as a lecturer in the Regional Engineering College, Warangal, and then at the Rourkela Steel Plant of the SAIL. He has more than three decades of experience in the HR field.
