Jamshed J Irani receives `Lifetime Achievement Award'

The government has conferred Jamshed J Irani, director, Tata Sons and former managing director of Tata Steel, with the `Lifetime Achievement Award'.
The award was presented to him at the 46th National Metallurgists Day and the 62th annual technical meeting of the Indian Institute of Metals, organised at the India Expo Centre, Greater Noida, National Capital Region.
The award acknowledges Irani's services in the area of metallurgy and the outstanding contributions that he has made in this field.
''I am humbled to get this honour and I would like to thank the ministry for conferring this award on me,'' Irani said while accepting the award.
The steel ministry honours metallurgists and scientists, technologists and academicians at the function for their remarkable contribution in the field of metallurgy.
Irani began his career in 1963 as senior scientific officer at the British Iron and Steel Research Association, Sheffield. In 1968, he joined Tata Steel as assistant to director (R&D). In 1979, he was appointed general manager and in 1985 he became president. He became the managing director in 1992, a position he held till July 2001.
