Jet Airways to lease A320s for JetLite
02 Dec 2011
Mumbai: Eyeing an emerging business opportunity the country's largest private carrier Jet Airways may lease more than 10 Airbus 320s for its budget airline JetLite. Kingfisher Airlines has announced its intention to exit the low-cost segment of airline business and Jet would like to move in for the kill.
Kingfisher Red, the LCC component of full service Kingfisher, is due to be phased out in two months' time.
According to sources, the A320s would replace the ageing JetLite fleet which was acquired from Sahara India in April 2007. JetLite, the low-cost subsidiary of Jet Airways, has a fleet of 18 737 single-aisle aircraft and flies to 27 domestic routes and one international destination.
The move may be a sound one as A320s are more fuel efficient and offer better passenger capacity.
In tough market conditions, Jet chairman Naresh Goyal has said that his airline will deploy 80% capacity in the low-cost segment over the next three to four years.
