Renault mulling super low-cost car: Le Figaro

French automaker Renault S A says it is contemplating a super low-cost car for emerging markets. Renault is thought to be working on a design for a car in a similar price range as the Tata small car.

According to a report in the French newspaper, Le Figaro, Renault would hire 1,000 engineers to design a new super low-cost model within three years, which would not be introduced in the European market.

Earlier in the week, the Munjals of the Hero Group had announced their interest in producing a 500cc small car.

Renault's move would enable it catch up other Indian manufacturers for an entry in to the Indian market.

A Renault spokeswoman commented on the Le Figaro report saying the company was thinking about a car priced more competitively than the Logan for emerging markets.

The Logan is Renault's existing low-cost model, which is manufactured in India, Romania, Russia, Iran, Colombia, Brazil and Morocco and sold in over 50 countries.
