Tata Motors, Samsung in pact for in-car infotainment systems

08 Feb 2014

Under an agreement reached between Tata Motors and Samsung, the South Korean electronics major will provide in-car infotainment systems to the Indian auto major.

According to a PTI report, Tata Motors would launch passenger vehicles next year equipped with Samsung's 'Drive Link Application' on MirrorLink technology to help drivers navigate, answer calls and access internet and music.

Tata Motors' passengers vehicles unit president, Ranjit Yadav said, the company would introduce passenger cars in the market that would come with the technology within the next year. Yadav was speaking on the sidelines of the Auto Expo 2014 in New Delhi.

He added, the company was looking at making the system available to its volume segment cars and not restrict it only to more expensive vehicles like Safari or Aria. The two companies have been working jointly on the project for the last six months.

Samsung is already in global collaboration with the German auto major BMW for the system and the development marks its first success with the system, in India.

Meanwhile, analysts are wondering whether the car infotainment system from the tech giant would win back some lost ground for Indian car manufacturer Tata Motors.

The best part of the deal was the fact that the company was going to make the infotainment system available on even mid-range and not so expensive cars too.

PTI quoted Yadav as saying that it will make its cars one of the best and even those who go for the volume segment cars could look forward to the advanced technology.

Though commentators agreed it would certainly be a plus point, they were not sure how much benefit it would bring in total fortunes of the company.
