Rolls, P&W drop litigation over patent rights

22 Jul 2011

Rolls-Royce has settled a legal row over patent rights with US rival Pratt & Whitney (P&W), in a case that had threatened to delay deliveries of Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Both parties dropped lawsuits filed against each other over disputes surrounding Rolls-Royce's Trent 900 and 1000 engines and the GP7200 engine, developed jointly by Pratt & Whitney and General Electric.

Terms weren't disclosed.

"We have reached an amicable, confidential settlement agreement resulting in dismissal of all patent litigation between the parties," a Rolls-Royce e-mailed statement said.

Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc is the world's second-largest maker of jet engines.

The companies requested in 15 July court filings dismissal of two civil lawsuits against each other.

The settlement also covers a related case before the US International Trade Commission (ITC) that threatened to delay delivery of Boeing Co's 787 Dreamliner airplanes.
