Jet Airways ups market share against Air India in Q2

New Delhi: The country's largest private carrier, Jet Airways, has increased its lead in domestic market share over legacy carrier, state-owned, Air India, by almost 6 per cent during the second quarter this year. The quarter experienced a total of 115.14 lakh passengers boarding flights.     

According to ministry of civil aviation figures, Jet Airways has garnered a market share of 21.1 per cent, compared with Air India's 15.4 per cent in the April-June period. In the corresponding period last year, Jet held a market share of 21.9 per cent as compared to Air India's 21 per cent.     

The other dominant full service carrier Kingfisher also increased its share over the year ago period to 14.3 per cent, from 12 per cent. However, it's merged partner Simplifly Deccan saw its market share dropping to 13.5 per cent as compared to 18.1 per cent in the same period last year.     

Low-cost carrier, SpiceJet, increased its domestic market share to 10.5 per cent, from 8.3 per cent last year.     

Another budget airline, IndiGo, increased its market share to 11.7 per cent as against 6.7 per cent in the same period a year ago.    

In the second quarter, Jet Airways carried a total of 24.28 lakh passengers against Air India's 17.71 lakh. Kingfisher flew 16.52 lakh passengers, while Deccan carried a total of 15.54 passengers.

IndiGo flew a total of 13.50 lakh passengers in the quarter as compared to 11.52 lakh last year.
