Delhi international airport sees off F1 cargo

New Delhi: The additional rush caused by the arrival of F1 Grand Prix gear and crew has been handled without fuss by DIAL, operators of the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The airport is now in the process of handling the departure of the hi-tech equipment and cars of participating Formula One teams.

According to Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) officials, at least two dedicated F1 freighters are expected to depart everyday between 1-4 November.

''We feel that the capacity of the IGI Airport, on both the city-side and air-side, is one of the biggest reasons why Delhi was chosen as the venue for this prestigious event. We are capable of handling many such events simultaneously without any effect on our normal operations,'' a DIAL spokesperson said.

The first Indian Grand Prix concluded Sunday and has been adjudged a huge success.

According to officials at the airport, the logistics exercise at the airport for the F1 event is ''critical and high value transition''.

''More than the volume, it is the time factor that is key in making the logistics support successful. Post this race, the entire equipment will have to be shifted to the next race, and hence it is extremely time critical,'' a DIAL official said.
