11 Sep 2008

Hyderabad: The first two air charters, Boeing 747-200 and a Boeing 747-400 landed at the world-class cargo facilities at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Hyderabad, ushering in opportunities for large-bodied freighter planes, and setting the tone for the emergence of the GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited as a cargo hub.

In a release, GHIAL's chief commercial officer VIswanath Attaluri said that the flights mark the first step in the terminal's endeavour to make RGIA a world-class cargo hub.

Attaluri said that Hyderabad's location offers a great advantage for domestic and international logistics operations, specially in terms of connectivity with South East Asia.

The two air charters had touched down at the RGIA to pick up cargo. The Boeing 747-400 F is one of the largest freighters in the world.

Hyderabad is the latest addition to Chennai, Mumbai and Bangalore as a cargo terminal. The air cargo complex at the RGIA has an annual capacity to handle one lakh tonnes of cargo.
