Singapore Airlines, Jet axe Amritsar operations

20 Jan 2009

Singapore Airlines will stop its flights from Amritsar from 2 February. Reasons cited were like lack of cargo and J class load.

The airline said there was no move to review the decision, though it would have liked to continue the operations as they were getting sufficient economy class load.

Jet Airways had stopped daily Amritsar-London flights in November last year, to the chagrin of NRIs and vegetable exporters. Taking up part of the space is GoAir, which has decided to launch flights from 15 February connecting Amritsar with Mumbai and Srinagar.

Traders and industrialists have hailed the move.

But the airport's Rs140 crore modernisation and expansion project, currently under way, will not be affected and is likely to be commissioned soon, according to a senior manager.
