Tata Steel ready to construct new airport at Jamshedpur

17 May 2011

Global steel major and domestic giant Tata Steel has applied to the ministry for civil aviation to set up a greenfield airport at its steel headquarters in Jamshedpur. The project, apparently, has been in planning since 2007 and Tata Steel's application includes a detailed project report (DPR).

Tatas have apparently received clearance from the state government.

Interestingly, Tata Steel has proposed to build the new airport for public use as part of its overall CSR activity. The new airport will replace the existing smaller airport.

Larsen & Toubro have carried out technical feasibility study for the project.

Tata Steel has pointed out that air connectivity has become extremely important for the steel city and that currently no commercial operations are carried out at the Jamshedpur airport, which was developed way back in 1940.

The short runway of the existing airport limits operations allowing only small aircraft to operate.

The nearest airport for this important steel and industrial hub is the airport at Ranchi, which is three and half hour's drive away from the city.
