Government looking at recommendations of DRDO Review Committee
23 Apr 2008
New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Review Committee constituted by the Government, and chaired by P Rama Rao, former secretary, Dept of Science & Technology, to suggest measures for improving the functioning of DRDO with respect to the ministry of defence and the country's Armed Forces, has submitted its report to the Government last month, the government informed the Rajya Sabha.
According to defence minister, AK Antony, the report is currently under consideration of the Government.
According to Antony, though there had been delays in some of the DRDO projects, these were due to some genuine difficulties, such as technical complexities, technological embargo/sanctions, non-availability of infrastructure within the country, extended and long lasting user trials, revision of systems specification during development phase, etc.
Besides many constraints, DRDO had equipped the country's defence services with state-of-the-art technologies in the field of strategic systems, battle tanks, electronic warfare and communication systems, armour and armaments, life support systems, naval systems, missile systems, aerospace systems, etc.
DRDO is developing only defence –critical/denied technologies and strategic systems and in this area it had ensured 100 per cent self-reliance. As far as tactical systems are concerned, DRDO is responsible for design, development, trials and evaluation, as and when tasked by Government.
This information was given by the defence minister AK Antony in a written reply to BK Hariprasad in Rajya Sabha today.
