Kingfisher, BA mull code-share agreement

Mumbai: Indian private carrier, Kingfisher Airlines, is negotiating a code-sharing arrangement with British Airways (BA) for domestic routes. If the move succeeds it would be the first such agreement between a private Indian carrier and a foreign airline

The carrier is likely to seek permission from regulatory authorities only after successful conclusion of talks with BA.

A Kingfisher spokesperson has apparently confirmed being in talks with international carriers without naming any. The spokesperson also confirmed having sounded out the ministry of civil aviation on an informal basis.

So far code-sharing arrangements are not permitted on domestic routes between international and domestic carriers. Though an informal arrangement exists between India and France, which allows Air France-KLM and Air India limited agreements for three destinations within the country.

Industry experts point out that the move by Kingfisher and BA helps both airlines and passengers as Kingfisher has a small international network while British Airways does not operate on feeder routes within India. Code-sharing allows both airlines to enhance their network.

For passengers, the arrangement allows seamless travel from one destination in India to any destination around the world.
