India to develop interceptor based missile-shield system
15 Jun 2008
Dr V K Saraswat, scientist at Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has said that India is evaluating the possibility of developing an anti-missile shield against conventional or nuclear attacks.
The missile shield will have comprise highly sensitive radars to track incoming missiles, and an interceptor that would be capable of destroying them.
He said the guidance system in missile-shield would be capable of ensuring that the aggressor missile collides with the missile of the defence system within a matter of seconds, thus saving vital targets from destruction. He said such a system is absolutely imperative for India to protect its populous metros and vital installations such as nuclear power stations and oil wells.
