India to test submarine launched ballistic missile system

16 Feb 2008

After a string of successful test firings with ballistic (Agni) and anti-ballistic missiles (Advanced Air Defence), Indian defence scientists are set to plug another missing link in the country's line up of strategic weapon systems through an underwater ballistic missile launch.

According to reports, the submarine launched ballistic missile (SLBM) K-15 will be test-fired next week from an underwater launcher, which will be a replica of a submarine missile launch tube.

Reports suggest that the missile will be test fired on 24 or 25 February from INS Kalinga, about 13 km from Vishakhapatnam.

Reports quoting defence sources say that the missile will be fired from an underwater launcher that will be positioned about eight km from the coastline at a depth of 50 metres. Referred to as the Pontoon, the launcher has been designed by the Electronics Corporation of India.

It is also being reported that the missile to be test fired will have a strike range of 750 km.
