Air India takes 6 CRJ-700 aircraft on lease

New Delhi: Newly-merged Air India is due to take six 70-seater Canadian Regional Jets (CRJs) on lease from four global players, and will operate them "on thin routes" which are being identified. The merged entity's joint managing director, Vishwapati Trivedi, told the media that the aircraft would begin operations from August this year.
The first of these CRJ-700 aircraft would be inducted in August, Trivedi said, and they would operate as part of the joint fleet of the merged state-owned airline under the Air India banner.
The aircraft would be in an all-economy configuration and the service for passengers would include basic meals, Trivedi further said.
Trivedi also said that the exercise to synergise the route network of the two public sector carriers was on, and that the joint entity would formally start functioning as Air India from mid-July.
