Trishul surface to air missile system not a failure, says AK Antony

18 May 2007

New Delhi: Defence minister, AK Antony, has informed the Parliament that the 'Trishul' surface-to air missile (SAM) system is not a failure, as it has met all technical requirements and performance objectives as per original qualitative requirements (QRs), though in a delayed manner. The main reason for the delay, according to Antony, have been technical problems related to achieving perfect 3-beam guidance and also in obtaining millimetric wave components from abroad.

The Trishul SAM system is a low-level, quick-reaction, short range, surface-to-air missile.
The minister has also mentioned that development of the Trishul missile system kept getting delayed because of modifications in QRs and operational requirements over time, which resulted in the army, air force and navy resorting to acquisitions from abroad.

In this regard he also mentioned that dialogue with the air force was still on for it to accept the system.

Antony was responding by way of a written reply to Lok Sabha member of parliament Rakesh Singh.
