Despite stiff competition from private television channels Doordarshan revenues during 2008-09 rose to Rs 737.05 crore Rs 724.42 crore in the previous year, marginally lower than was Rs726.07 crore in 2006-07.

In a written reply to an unstarred question in Lok Sabha, information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni today said that during 2005-06 and 2008-09, there was an increase in Doordarshan's operational costs due to the grant of dearness pay and the impact of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations on salary.

The operational expenses of Doordarshan in 2005-06 and 2008-09 were Rs 1,069.25 crore and Rs 1,152.42 crore respectively.

However during 2006-07 and 2007-08 they cam down to Rs913.92 crore and Rs830.27 crore respectively.

Soni said that while the operational cost of Doordarshan did not constantly increase over the last five years, the revenue generation during the same period has shown consistent growth.
