Online banner advertisement to grow by 40 per cent in 2008-09

The online banner advertisement market in India would grow at 40 per cent to reach Rs350 crore by 2008-09 from its current size of Rs235 crore [2007-08] according to the Internet and Mobile Association [IAMAI] and IMRB study titled ''Online Banner Advertisement in India'' released today.

The study also revealed that BFSI, online industry and ITES with 25 per cent, 25 per cent and 13 per cent share are the leading advertisers in the online banner space in 2007/08. In 2008-09, the share of BFSI is expected to rise marginally to 26 per cent while the share of online companies is likely to come down to 23 per cent. Auto, FMCG, consumer durables and dducation are some of the leading sectoral advertisers in the online banner space.

 

While the ad spends per user continues to be quite dismal compared with the US and Europe at $1.2, it is likely to rise to $1.6 in 2008-09.

The most encouraging news according to the report however is in 2007 80 per cent of the users surveyed clicked on an online advertisement. This was substantial increase from 56 per cent for the year 2006.

Commenting on this IAMAI president Subho Ray said, 'the advertisers need to take a serious note of the fact that 80 per cent of the users have clicked on an online advertisement and make their spending plans accordingly''.
