Man who crossed fence Budgam Air Force Station in Kashmir shot dead

Security forces shot dead an unidentified elderly man who allegedly crossed the security fence of the high-security Air Force station in Budgam district of central Kashmir, a police spokesman said today.

He was shot at as the man refused to stop despite repeated warnings to keep away from the area, sources said.

The person allegedly crossed the security fence and came close to the station perimeter wall, a police statement said, adding that despite repeated warnings from the sentry, he did not stop.

''The sentry fired some warning shots in the air, but the individual did not stop. The sentry (then) fired towards him," the statement said, adding that the elderly man, who is yet to be identified, is believed to be mentally unstable.

The [person, aged between 50-55 years, appeared to be mentally challenged, and was not wearing footwear or winter clothing. He also had no identity proof.

The station authorities informed the nearby Humhama police post and police officials rushed to the scene.

The station is in a remote area and there is no habitation near the place of the incident.

The police are in the process of ascertaining the identity of the man and have sought help from nearby villages for identification of the individual.
