DRDO successfully flight-tests Phase-II ballistic missile defence system

26 Jul 2024

Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) on Wednesday successfully flight-tested Phase-II of the indigenously developed ballistic missile defence system.

The test was conducted using another ballistic missile, launched from LC-IV Dhamra, as the target.

The adversary missile, launched at 1620 hours, was detected by weapon system radars deployed on land and sea, prompting activation of the air defence interceptor system.

The Phase-II AD, an endo-atmospheric missile, was launched from LC-III at ITR, Chandipur at 1624 hours. The flight test  validated complete functioning of network centric weapon system consisting of Long Range Sensors, low latency communication system and MCC and Advance Interceptor missiles, thereby meeting all the trial objectives.

The performance of the air defence missile was monitored from the flight data captured by range tracking instruments like electro-optical systems, radar and telemetry stations deployed by Chandipur ITR at various locations, including on-board ship.

The Phase-II ballistic missile defence system is capable of defending against adversary ballistic missiles with a reach of  5,000 km.

The two-stage solid propelled ground launched missile system is capable of neutralising several types of enemy ballistic missile threats in the endo to low exo-atmospheric regions.

The Phase-II ballistic missile defence system incorporates a  number of state-of-the-art indigenous technologies developed by various DRDO laboratories.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh and secretary of the department of defence R&D and chairman of DRDO Samir V Kamat complimented DRDO for the  successful demonstration of the country’s ballistic missile defence capability.
