First phase of Karwar Naval Base completed

The first phase of the Karwar Naval Base project has been completed with the commissioning of a civilian township at Amadalli, the last remaining construction activity associated with Phase-I of the project.

Speaking at the commissioning of the project, defence minister AK Anthony said planning for the second phase of the project was well underway and work will commence once the cabinet approves the expansion.

Phase 2 of the project involves augmentation of facilities at the Naval base to cater for basing of additional ships and submarines at Karwar.

The minister complemented the engineers and contractors associated with the project, for developing world-class infrastructure for the defence civilians at Amadalli.

"The growth of the Karwar Naval Base provided considerable impetus to the economy of the Uttar Kannada region," he pointed out, adding, "the ministry of defence had allotted a sum of Rs126.96 crore to the state for rehabilitation of local inhabitants.

He said all the rehabilitation centers have been established and houses provided to the families with electricity. The township has better drainage and roads and schools, he pointed out.
