India's foodgrain stock swells to over 47.1 million tonnes

Total foodgrain stocks held by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and other state procurement agencies stood at over 47.1 million tonnes as of 1 February 2011.

These included 27.8 million tonnes of rice and 19.37 million tonnes of wheat, an official release said today.

FCI and other state agencies undertake procurement and allotment of foodgrains under different schemes of the central and state governments.

Rice procurement as of 1 February 2011 (under 2010-11 kharif marketing season) stood at 18.76 million tonnes while wheat procurement in the 2010-11 rabi marketing season stood at 22.51 million tonnes

The offtake of rice under all schemes during January 2011 stood at 2.52 million tonnes. This comprised 2.1 million tonnes under TPDS and 4.38 lakh tonnes under other schemes. Total offtake of wheat during the period stood at 2.1 million tonnes, including 1.61 million tonnes under TPDS and 4.93 lakh tonnes under other schemes.

Total allocation of rice during January 2011 under TPDS, including BPL, APL and AAY, was 2.29 million tonnes, against which total offtake was 2.1 million tonnes, about 90.9 per cent.
