Bank credit up nearly 18 per cent at Rs33,24,193 crore in year to 21 May

Total bank credit in the country grew by Rs5,06,225.61 crore (17.96 per cent) year-on-year to Rs33,24,193.31 crore as of 21 May 2010 from Rs28,17,967.70 crore as of 22 May 2009, RBI data showed.

For the fortnight 7 May 2010 to 21 May 2010 bank credit grew by Rs1,916.14 core (0.057 per cent) to Rs33,24,193.31
crore from Rs33,22,277.17 crore.

Credit provided by scheduled commercial banks in the country (excluding inter-bank advances) rose by Rs4,93,726 crore (18.04 per cent) to 32,30,178.31 crore as of 21 May 2010 compared with Rs27,36,452.22 crore as of 22 May 2009.

In the same fortnight, credit provided by scheduled commercial banks grew by Rs2406.84 crore (0.074 per cent) to Rs32,30,178.31 crore from Rs32,27,771.47 crore.

Inter-bank demand and time liabilities of deposits of scheduled commercial banks stood at Rs61,709.54 crore as of 21 May 2010 compared with Rs48,702.81 crore as of 22 May 2009 and Rs61,083.29 crore as of 7 May 2009.

Deposits with scheduled commercial banks rose by Rs5,66,416.81 crore (14.29 per cent) to Rs45,31,217.28 crore as of 21 May 2010 from Rs39,64,800.47 crore as of 22 May 2009 and Rs45,26,220.20 crore as of 7 May 2010.
