Consumer price inflation in India at a 9-month high of 5.49% in September

Consumer price inflation based on the All India Consumer Price Index (Base 2012=100) hit a nine-month high of 5.49 per cent in September 2024. 

CPI inflation rate for rural areas stood at 5.87 per cent and that for urban areas at 5.05 per cent during the month.

Inflation rate based on the All India Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) stood at 9.24 per cent in September 2024, against 4.16 per cent in August. 

Food price inflation rate for rural areas stood at 9.08 per cent while it was 9.56 per cent for urban areas against 6.02 per cent and 4.99 per cent respectively in August, provisional figures released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) showed.

While food prices generally were ruling high, the inflationary situation can in part be attributed to high base effect and changes in weather conditions.

Consumer price inflation for rural areas stood at 4.16 per cent in August 2024 while inflation rate for urban consumers stood at 4.39 per cent during the month.

Food price inflation for rural areas stood at 6.02 per cent in August 2024 while it was 4.99 per cent for urban areas.

Consumer Price Index measures retail inflation by examining the changes in prices of some common consumer goods and services, including food, housing, apparel, transportation, electronics, medical care, education, etc, over a fixed period of time.
