Employment in export sector units up 5,00,000 in July-September 2009

The number of people employed in 2,873 units in the textiles, leather, metals, automobiles, gems and jewellery, transport, IT/BPO and handloom/powerloom in 21 centres across 11 states/ union territories increased by about 5,00,000, according to the fourth quarterly survey undertaken by the Labour Bureau.

Giving this information in the Rajya Sabha today, minister of state for labour and employment Harish Rawat said the stimulus packages have increased liquidity in the economy, thereby stimulating both production and consumption, which has a positive impact on employment generation.

It may be observed that overall employment level in the country had declined by 4,91,000 during the October-December 2008 quarter, increased by 2,76,00 during January-March 2009, declined again by 1,31,000 during April-June 2009, only to increase by 4,97,000 during the current quarter (July-September 2009).

Thus, the estimated employment in the selected sectors has experienced a net addition of 1,51,000 during the last one-year period, ie, from October 2008 to September 2009, the minister added.
