Food price inflation dips to 16.12 per cent

The annual rate of inflation based on the wholesale price index of food articles in the country declined to 16.12 per cent during the week ended 5 June 2001 from 16.74 per cent in the previous week.

The decline in inflation was due mainly to lower prices of fruits and vegetables (-6 per cent) and tea (-2 per cent).

Food price inflation stood at 9.45 per cent in the comparable week a year ago (week ended 6 June 2009).

The build-up of food price inflation so far during the financial year (beginning 1 April 2010) was also lower at 1.84 per cent against 3.44 per cent in the corresponding week of the previous year.

The index for the 'food articles' group declined 1.1 per cent to 293.2 (provisional) from 296.4 (provisional) in the previous week due to lower prices of fruits and vegetables (-6 per cent) and tea (-2 per cent). However, the prices of urad (6 per cent) and maize, bajra and gram (1 per cent each) moved up.

Inflation rate based on the wholesale price index of non-food articles declined to 18.25 per cent during the week ended 5 June 2010. It was 1.51 per cent in the comparable week of the previous year.
