India’s core sector industrial production up 6.1% in July

Core sector industrial production in India increased by 6.1 per cent year-on-year in July 2024 on the back of increased production of steel, electricity, coal, refinery products, cement, and fertilizers, provisional data released by the ministry of commerce and industry showed.

The combined index of eight core sector industries, comprising cement, coal, crude oil, electricity, fertilizers, natural gas, refinery products and steel, and accounting for 40.27 per cent of the combined weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), recorded a cumulative growth of 6.1 per cent during the April-July 2024-25 period.

The final growth rate of Index of Eight Core Industries for April 2024 stands revised to 6.9 per cent, based on updated figures. 

Production of cement, which has a weight of 5.37 per cent in the Index of Industrial Production) increased by 5.5 per cent in July 2024 while cumulative production of cement during April-July 2024-25 increased by 1.6 per cent year-on-year.

Coal production (weight of 10.33 per cent in IIP) increased by 6.8 per cent in July 2024 while cumulative coal production increased by 9.9 per cent during April-July 2024-25.

Production of crude oil (weight of 8.98 per cent in IIP) declined by 2.9 per cent in July 2024 while cumulative production of crude oil declined by 1.3 per cent during April-July 2024-25.

Electricity generation (weight of 19.85 per cent in IIP) increased by 7.0 per cent in July 2024 while cumulative generation of electricity increased by 9.9 per cent during April-July 2024-25.

Fertilizer production (weight of 2.63 per cent in IIP) increased by 5.3 per cent in July 2024 while cumulative production of fertilizers increased by 1.3 per cent during April-July 2024-25.

Production of natural gas (weight of 6.88 per cent in IIP) declined by 1.3 per cent in July 2024 while cumulative production of natural gas increased by 4.3 per cent during April-July 2024-25.Petroleum refinery production (weight of 28.04 per cent in IIP) increased by 6.6 per cent in July 2024 while cumulative refinery throughput increased by 2.3 per cent during April-July 2024-25.

Steel production (weight of 17.92 per cent in IIP) increased by 7.2 per cent in July 2024 while cumulative steel production increased by 7.6 per cent during April-July 2024-25.
