India’s industrial production contracts 4.3% in September

Industrial production in the country based on the index of industrial production (IIP) declined by 4.3 per cent year-on-year in September 2019, extending the negative growth of 1.1 per cent registered in August, quick estimates released today showed.

Cumulative growth of industrial output during the April-September 2019 period stood at 1.3 per cent.
Production in the mining, manufacturing and electricity sectors showed negative growth rates of (-) 8.5 per cent, (-) 3.9 per cent and (-) 2.6 per cent as compared to production in September 2018. 
Cumulative growth of production in these three sectors during April-September 2019 stood at 1.0 per cent, 1.0 per cent and 3.8 per cent, respectively.
Seventeen out of the 23 industry groups in the manufacturing sector have shown negative growth during September 2019. The industry group ‘motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ has shown the highest negative growth of (-) 24.8 per cent, followed by ‘furniture’ (-) 23.6 per cent and ‘fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment’ (-) 22.0 per cent. 
On the other hand, the industry group ‘wood and products of wood and cork, except furniture; manufacture of articles of straw and plaiting materials’ has shown the highest growth of 15.5 per cent, followed by ‘basic metals’9.2 per cent.
Primary goods production registered a negative growth rate of (-) 5.1 per cent in September while capital goods production grew at (-) 20.7 per cent, intermediate goods by 7.0 per and infrastructure and construction goods sector by (-) 6.4 per cent.
Production of consumer durables and consumer non-durables recorded growth rates of (-) 9.9 per cent and (-) 0.4 per cent, respectively.
