India’s industrial production expands 4.3% in August

Industrial production in the country based on the index of industrial production (IIP) expanded 4.3 per cent year-on-year in August while the cumulative expansion of industrial production for April-August 2018 stood at 5.2 per cent.

As per quick estimates, production in the mining, manufacturing and electricity sectors increased by (-) 0.4 per cent, 4.6 per cent and 7.6 per cent, respectively, during August 2018. The three sectors recoded cumulative growth of 3.9 per cent, 5.4 per cent and 5.8 per cent, respectively, during April-August 2018. 
Sixteen out of the 23 industry groups in the manufacturing sector have shown positive growth during August 2018. The industry group ‘manufacture of furniture’ has shown the highest growth of 29.2 per cent, followed by ‘manufacture of wearing apparel’ (18.9 per cent) and ‘manufacture of wood and products of wood and cork, except furniture; manufacture of articles of straw and plaiting materials’ (12.7 per cent).
On the other hand, the industry group ‘printing and reproduction of recorded media’ showed the highest negative growth of (-) 19.2 per cent followed by ‘Manufacture of tobacco products’ (- 17.0 per cent) and ‘manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products’ (- 7.3 per cent).
Production of Primary goods expanded 2.6 per cent, capital goods production increased by 5.0 per cent and intermediate goods production was up 2.4 per cent while production in the infrastructure/ construction goods increased by 4.8 per cent.
Production of consumer durables and consumer non-durables recorded growth of increases of 5.2 per cent and 6.3 per cent, respectively.
