18 Oct 2021
India’s industrial production, based on the index of industrial production (IIP) surged 11.9 per cent in August on the back of a jump in mining output and a firming up of manufacturing activity, data released by the ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI) showed. IIP grew 11.5 per cent in the previous month.
Mining output during August 2021 surged 23.6 per cent and electricity generation jumped 16 per cent, while manufacturing sector output grew 9.7 per cent as per quick estimates of the index of industrial production (IIP) released by the National Statistics Office (NSO).
Industrial production in the country has been steadily rising for the past few months mainly due to low-base of the previous year.
IIP had contracted 7.1% in August 2020.
During April-August this year, IIP had grown 28.6 per cent against a 25 per cent contraction in the same period last year.
Industrial production has been hit due to the coronavirus pandemic since March last year when it had contracted 18.7 per cent.
It shrank 57.3 per cent in April 2020 due to a decline in economic activity in the wake of the lockdown imposed to curb the spread of coronavirus infection.
